The Truth About Starting the "Right" Business

One of the most Googled questions in the world is:
“What small business should I start?”

And honestly, I get it.

People want a fail-proof answer.
They want a business idea that’s going to make money fast, never stress them out, and scale on autopilot.
But let me tell you the truth — and not the Instagram version:

There are a million ways to make money.
The question isn’t which business to start.
The real question is:
What kind of business are you willing to mentally, emotionally, and creatively show up for — even on the hard days?

Because those days will come.

Don’t Chase the Trend — Solve a Problem You Care About

If you want to build a business that lasts, that scales, and that doesn’t eat you alive in the process…
start with a problem you actually care about solving.

Let me give you an example from my own life:

I hate seeing people operate below their potential.
I hate seeing smart, gifted, brilliant folks stuck, stressed out, and playing small.
That used to keep me up at night.

So over a decade ago (okay, closer to two — but let’s not talk about that 👀), I started coaching.

I was still working within an organization back then, coaching managers, executives, recruiters, and sales reps. I wasn’t hired as “a coach.” I just saw potential in people and couldn’t sit by and ignore it.

And eventually, when I hit my ceiling there, I stepped out and started my own consulting company.

It hasn’t always been easy.
There were challenges. Learning curves. Low revenue months.
But guess what?

Even on my lowest revenue months, I’ve had some of my highest impact moments.
Moments where business leaders hit breakthroughs.
Moments where entrepreneurs walked away with more clarity and peace than they’d ever had.
That’s what keeps me going.

Choose Purpose Over Pressure

If you choose a business that doesn’t connect with you deeply, that doesn't give you a sense of satisfaction or joy — it’ll show up in your health.

You’ll feel it in your body.
You’ll feel the stress rising.
Your blood pressure will spike, your sleep will suffer, and your spirit will start to dry out.

But when you’re working in your purpose?
There’s a flow.
There’s a sense of peace.
There’s a why that helps you push through the chaos.

And no, that doesn’t mean it’ll be easy.
But it means it will be worth it — and that makes all the difference.

So if you’re asking: “What business should I start?”

Here’s my answer:

Start with something that...

  • Solves a real problem

  • Gives you a deep sense of purpose

  • Aligns with your values and energy

  • Is worth showing up for, even when the numbers are off

And once you find it, remind yourself of that purpose daily.
Because that purpose is what grounds you. That purpose is what keeps you from giving up too soon.

Success isn’t just about making money — it’s about building something that makes you come alive.

Final Thought:
The business you build should feel like a calling — not a cage.
So build it right.
