Is Sales Training Really Worth It?

One question I get asked often is: “Is sales training actually worth it?”

The short answer?
Absolutely—if you want to close more deals and build a sustainable business.

Sales is not just about being a “people person” or having a smooth pitch. It’s a high-performance skill set—a mixture of interpersonal intelligence, clear communication, psychology, and entrepreneurial thinking. All of that needs to be packaged and executed within a short 3 to 30-minute conversation. And if you're working longer sales cycles? Add patience, mindset, and emotional resilience to that list.

But here’s the thing:
You can absolutely learn sales on your own. The question is, how long will that take—and what will it cost you in the meantime?

The Real Cost of Figuring It Out on Your Own

Here’s what’s happening while you’re trying to “figure it out” on your own:

  1. You're not making money—or you’re barely scraping by.

  2. You’re wasting valuable leads—practicing on actual customers.

  3. You’re getting emotionally burned out—because the rejection stings more when you don’t know what you’re doing wrong.

That would be like an NFL team running their practice during the actual game. No drills, no scrimmage, just “learning as we go.”
They’d lose every time. And we’d watch them get roasted on SportsCenter.

Yet many business owners and salespeople do this every single day—winging it, guessing, and hoping their charisma carries them.

Sales Is a Skill—And Skills Need Training

Without sales training, most people are closing around 10% of their leads—or less. That means they’re not selling with skill, they’re selling with luck. And luck isn’t scalable.

Trained sales professionals close 17% to 32% of their leads. On my best days, I was closing around 45%. But even then, I faced more rejection than closes. That’s the truth about sales—no matter how good you are, it’s a numbers game.

And let’s be real:
Most people can't mentally sustain the level of rejection that sales naturally includes—unless they’ve been trained and developed the mindset to handle it.

“But I’m a Natural…”

Even if you're naturally gifted at sales, you’re still leaving money on the table without training. Raw talent without discipline, strategy, and accountability only takes you so far.

Training sharpens your instincts. It helps you identify buyer types, shorten your sales cycle, handle objections like a pro, and close more consistently.

And here’s the kicker:
Even the best salespeople need accountability. Sales success is built on great habits—and even top producers can lose focus without it.

So, Is Sales Training Worth It?

If you're serious about business growth, income, and impact—yes.

Sales training helps you:

  • Increase your closing rate

  • Build confidence and consistency

  • Stop wasting leads and time

  • Stay mentally strong in a high-rejection environment

  • Develop habits that help you win long-term

Bottom line: Sales training pays for itself. And the sooner you get it, the sooner you stop losing deals that should’ve been yours.
